What 4 tools can't you live without?

Four tools? That gives me freedom of choice!

#1 will be my hands. No matter what I'm doing I am going to need those. And I can't resist getting my fingers in the paint when I am painting.

#2 would have to be a needle as I usually make my mark with thread

#3 = TAP Transfer Artist Paper so I could transfer my favorite images and text on almost any surface I choose to work on.

#4 is going to be a practical choice - my scissors!

Do you have a favorite technique?

There are so many to choose from but if I look back over the years I think it is obvious that my favorite technique is transferring images. There is very little (if any!) of my work that does not have a transferred image or text on it.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I am driven by a desire to translate beauty, memory, color and the things that hold wonder for me into work that evokes similar feelings for others. That drive is my inspiration.

Tell us about a current project, what challenges are facing you in bringing your vision into reality?

While I still make art it has really taken a back seat to my driving passion and current project, which is to make things happen for other artists. When I "went public" with my art 12 years ago, my main focus was to inspire other women to uncover their creativity and discover their own artistic voice. I spent my first 40+ years trying to do that myself, and I wanted to do everything I could to make sure other women didn't miss out on the joy and sense of completeness that I had discovered through my art.

Sharing that passion has propelled me on a journey and such an amazing career as an artist. Rather than share the how-to to create the art, I now share the how-to to create the artist. I want everyone to reach the level of success they aspire to with their art.

What challenges do I face in bringing that vision into reality? Having the time and the means to get my message out into the world. So thank you, Cheryl, for this opportunity to spread the word some more.

After art, what is your passion?

My family is my noisy, outgoing, energy draining passion. Reading + gathering knowledge and then writing and sharing that knowledge is my quiet, alone, energy creating passion. I can never get enough of either one.

Artist and Animal Friend Laurie Manz In The Spotlight

Lions And Tigers ...And Lions!

My very dear cousin in law, Laurie Manz, and I recently became reacquainted earlier this year on... drum roll please... Facebook. How wonderful. We had to catch up after 40 years of distance and lost time.

Laurie, a true artist in oils, does beautiful animal and people portraiture. Her proceeds benefit the ASPCA and her heart goes out to all those poor lonely, lost, and mistreated animals everywhere. She is an true advocate and hero in all canine and feline circles.

She recently painted my most special cat, Min. What a treasure I now have as Min has passed away from a long battle with thyroid and kidney disease. I cherish this gift from Laurie and could never thank her enough.

Laurie's kindness did not stop there. With my last visit to Pittsburgh, I was given a beautiful portrait of the ghost lion, done lovingly in her small studio. I brought him home and call him Aslan, after the lion in the Narnia Movie series. He is a stunning likeness, don't you think? Thank you Laurie!!

I just love how perfectly the rows of grapevine grow on the hillsides. I had been to Napa and to Sonoma, but there is nothing like kicking back, watching the sunset and smelling the nearly ripened grape on the vine in your own back yard.

One of our local wineries, right outside of Gettysburg, PA is such a place. Atop a hill amidst the grapevined acreage sits the Hauser Estate Winery Tasting Room and Reception Spread. It is the most beautiful view at sunset and has housed several wonderful wedding receptions for that very reason.

Creating Steampunk Excitement

For those of you in the steampunk venue, you know all about Massachussett's Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum! For those of you who do not, you are in for a treat

I had been following Bruce and his steampunk victorian revival through his www.modvic.com website, which has grown, grown, grown leaps and bounds for the past several years. I first stumbled upon him by Googling for Victorian restorations. Lucky me. It was a new world.

And much to my pleasure and excitement, our son, master engineer, Christopher, and conceptual design genius of functional steampunk, Bruce have recently paired up to invent some pretty awesome steampunked, high tech stuff!

Dark And Stormy Nite In The Studio

OK this is trite, I know. However sometimes things do seem a little creepier when it is dark ... and stormy.

My studio is a wonderful and inspiring place, with bundles and bags, and pieces of things, glitter, and string. Oh yeh, and a bunch of baby doll heads bought at a wonderful flea market event in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.

Holiday Show At The Warehime~Myers Mansion

Its that time of year again for holiday fun and excitement! The mansion is beautiful this time of year with fall and soon to be Christmas decorations. I am on a committee to organize this event, which is now in its third year, and it has been amazing to see how much this show has grown!!

This November there will be two auto harp performances by Linda Huber, and an appearance by the Hanover High School Choir, in Dicken's style costume, conducted by Debra Smith.

I will be among some of the most talented of art chix in the area, vending for three days at the show, located on Baltimore Street in Hanover, PA. Come out to see me and start collecting those one of a kind holiday gifts and treasures!

New Friends Made & Tons of Fun Had At

Art Is You

I had so much fun and excitement vending at Art Is You this year. My most popular items this year were the tiaras of course and the perfume bottle necklaces.

There were stellar workshops with Thomas Ashman, Richard Salley, Ruth Rae, Annie Hess, Dianna Trout, and the list goes on....

Etching metal, making rivets, designing journals, creating dolls.......all this and more.

For me, vending at the event was so inspiring. Being among those with such wonderful talent and creations was humbling. I loved meeting people who I had only once read about at some point in my creative field tripping that I get to selfishly do on those rainy or off days.

One special new friend, Ruth Rae, www.ruthrae.blogspot.com
was one such iconic woman. Just love her writing and creative design ideas. Her easy embroidering style on soft cloth and how she incorporates metal, found objects and cloth definitely had the ahhhh factor for me. I was so excited to make a trade of one of my perfume bottle necklaces with her metal disc rings. I oogled those rings for a whole day before actually getting to wear one. : ) Look for her rings in the next issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry Magazine. You will just have to get one of your own! Bling ~a ~bling ~bling.

I was glad to be a part of all the excitement for sure as I took candid shots of behind the scenes filming.

Martine Cajas, the show's host, and master baker in his own right, loved, loved, loved Christi's cupcakes as she walked him through her establishment and offered up some samples!

The episode airs in February (in the shows second season) on WGAL, channel 8, on the NBC network. Look for it and stop by Christina's to offer congrats and then have a cup of TerRiFic roasted coffee or some FaBulouS chai tea. Mmmm. Don't forget the wholesome goodness of honest to gosh cupcakes. They are definitely comfort and chic combined!

Journal Notes

Mini Metal Journal

I make lists. Actually.... lots of lists. Sometimes these lists end up behind the cabinet or in a pile with something else. This is life.

Such a mini journal could be used to keep all these lists together, as the days and weeks move on. Maybe a little book of grocery lists. That's just crazy, right? Who would want to do that :)

This little gem is just couture enough to wear on a chain. Its pages kept for only the most secret journal notes.....maybe a sketch or poem.

You don't often find places like these. When you discover such gems, you want to share the find with all your girlfriends!!

Long time friend, Rose of Fairfax and I had discovered this whimsical, girly, awesome shoppe together in Woodstock, VA (the other Woodstock!)

It reminded me of all the charm found in another favorite haunt....Lucketts General Store in Luckett's, Virginia.

Manager and merchandiser, Sally, was the perfect gal to make you feel oh, so at home. She had a story about all her pieces and certainly had the knack for honoring all the lovely things in the most perfect way.

I found humor, lace crystals, jewels, mirrors, linens, soaps, millinary couture....and the list goes on.

These blooms are substantial. Funny, but I never paid much attention to their brilliance, until recently, when I heard the Baltimore Orioles as they darted in and out of that tree. I plucked a few for pictures and set a few in some water. They are fabulous flowers!!

Finding Frozen Charlotte

My First Frozen Charlotte!!

ou la la, I found her.............at the Art and Soul Retreat. She was the last pitiful one on the table and I had to have her. She has now become one of the pieces in my simply pretty stuff collection, just waiting to be graced and adorned with design.

As the Frozen story goes, Charlotte went out with her boyfriend in a carriage into the cool night's air. Her mother urged her to take a wrap to stay warm, but Charlotte chose not to follow that advise. She died from the cold, alas. With a sad heart, her boyfriend died of the news.

Nothing like a good German folktale tragedy. I can say this because I grew up in a German household, with interesting bedtime stories.

Yesterday and today have been crazy busy days between the garden and the studio. Just love to be busy letting those creative forces work. A mouthful of Ghiriadelli chocolate caramel squares sure do have a place in all that too ; )

Spring Surprises

Sometimes the spring plan for posies is made in the fall, in anticipation of a bountiful spring splendor. It works half of the time here...well...yep, about half the time. This year the several year old wisteria out did itself. This was a plan and a hope we had when we transplanted the young sapling into so very sad and brick hard dirt ~ in a drought year. I watered with the laundry rinse water that year! Alas, now I can say it was soooo worth it.

As well this spring, there were some sweet surprises. Blooming Ajuga found its way to the front yard between the blades of virgin grass.

Another find this spring was of the reptile type. A family of brown water snakes made their home in our pond this year. Back to the wetlands they go.

Art & Soul Rejuvenation

The weekend was here and gone in a blink of an eye, but oooh, what fun was had, and new things learned in the window of time that we did have.

My recently found, best high school girlfriend, Rose and I began our trek on Saturday, heading down to Hampton, VA for classes, instruction and kinship. Ingenious, creative things were made, good food and wine were definitely consumed, and new acquaintances eagerly made.

I felt like a kid in the candy store with all the vendor displays and merchandise. The likes of Richard Salley, Sheri Haab and the Art Chix were there sharing tricks of the jewelry design trade as well as sharing their fascinating life stories.

Ah, back to work in the studio now. Can't wait to try out some of those new things I learned in those very cool workshops. Pictures to follow soon.

Art & Soul again next year? Sure thing. The inspiration was definitely priceless.

A Special Donation To Support The Chemo~Comfort Organization

I was lucky enough to meet a fantastic and passionate woman last year as I became involved in an organization called Chemo~Comfort. A cancer survivor herself, Anne Marie Paolucci has developed this organization that caringly assembles boxes of items persons going through chemotherapy may find useful to use as they receive treatment for their cancer. Based in New York City, Chemo~Comfort has grown to provided boxes to hundreds of patients everywhere.

Each year Anne Marie and her team conducts a spring fundraiser and gives away wonderful goods and services donated from local and not so local retail merchants. http://www.chemocomfort.org/

in Hanover, PA is a honest to gosh Carriage House, turned carriage house market shoppe, by manager Heather Sheppard.

Inside there are fresh cuts of beef directly from the local Sheppard farms, as well as a variety of milks and cream, all in stout glass vessels!

The cuts of beef and soon to arrive fish are the same wonderful pieces prepared by the chef in the mansion's own restaurant.

Each Saturday there are fresh warm sticky buns and always locally produced coffee. Mmmm.

The real prize for the customer who happens into the Carriage House is the wonderful selection of local art and products displayed between two huge rooms. Lotions and soaps, scribed birdhouse gourds, dinnerware, pottery..........and much more!

Aging Grace

Not everything ages gracefully. Not everyone would consider an inanimate object as something having age at all. However, things like buildings and trees, surely do age, flying through time along side their human counterparts. In the usual city, one can find spectacular architecture, with or without facelift, or the remains of a crumbling ruin, once something spectacular, but now neglected, as it was abandoned in time.

New York has some wonderful surprises and things that warrant a stop to ponder their designers, builders, planters, caretakers.

Here, in the Simply Pretty Stuff Studio, it has been quite the busy few weeks. During these long, long work days, the holiday cheer has come mostly from the parade of endless seasonal songs on the radio and a steady stream of hot tea in between. I love it!

If you know me, you also know I love my coffee. However, there are times tea (or cocoa!) takes its place as the hot beverage of choice. That's OK I say, since this week I managed to celebrate coffee in a different way!!

I am not a coffee snob, but I love the local coffee shoppes in Hanover and New Oxford, PA. Christina's http://www.christinasdesserts.com/ is one of my favorites right now as described in an earlier blog post. Anywho, yes, I HAVE had a Starbuck's or two, or three....

One of the things I do is recycle, when I can, in my art. WELL, enough said. Those little Starbuck's sample cups made it right into my treasure trove of tiara's!! Take a peek at the coffee bean/glitter crown of glory!

London And Back.................

London For The Holidays

It has been a busy few weeks in and out of the studio for sure. The elves and I worked hard to get Christmas orders ready before leaving the country for several whirlwind days. Destination? London, England. Lucky me, I managed to sneak off to London to attend a few seminars on social platforming, a hot topic in business nowadays, and to visit old friends, while scoping out the latest trends in fashion and jewelry of course!!

My favorite thing to do this time of year in London is to check out the ice skating, the parks and the window decorations for sure. Sticky Pudding Cake, my favorite British sweetness, is popular this time of year. As well, we enjoy the Stollen, a fruit laden German Christmas cake. I have got some great recipes so that I can try to replicate these yummy confections at home, here in the states.

During this trip, I was able to spend the entire DAY last Saturday at The Portobello Road Market. Oh my, I was in heaven, yes indeed!!

For most of the day Saturday and Sunday, artisan Vicki wore this tiara as she worked a huge holiday show. By the end, she simply could not be without this flirty piece!

Christmas Show Success

There was no snow this weekend, but there was a sure nip in the air during the three day Holiday to Harvest Show in Hanover, PA to put everyone in the Christmas present mood.

Our gracious host, the Warehime Myers Mansion, now part of the Hanover Area Historic Society, was most welcoming to all our customers which included, Hanover High School Choir, Linda Huber at the Auto Harp, and of course, SANTA and Mrs Claus!!

I have included some of my Simply Pretty Stuff inventory pictures, as well as items from some of the other artists at our show.

Coffee Breaking At Christina's

I have never been known to turn down a sticky sweet confectionery or two. I surely do not deny myself at this wonderful coffee/pastry shoppe called Christina's.

Fortunately too, I have never been allergic to wheat. However, I do know lots of friends and family that cannot partake in foods with either wheat or sugar.

At Christina's, one of the temptations IS the gluten free chocolate chippers and the sugar free nougat bar. Mmmm. For sure there are sugar sweetened things too. I love love love the wheat free blondies though AND the multigrain bagels with pumpkin cream cheese!!

The aroma is coffee for sure, and the decor, warm and welcoming. Sit in the private alcove with crystal chandelier or enjoy the cozy sofa and wifi connection while you sip a hot chai this winter..........

Simply Pretty Stuff To Be At The Holiday Show At The Mansion On

November 4, 5, and 6 in Hanover, PA

This is a holiday show with fellow artisans. I love being there and am so pleased that in the past 4 years, it has grown in attendance beyond expectations. I am one of six gals who worked hard to make it all happen. Thanks to elves Toni Burns, Cheri Cline, Lisa Elsner, Jeanette Miller and Cel Smith.

This year, Santa is making an appearance, as well as the Hanover High School Choir, directed by Deb Smith. On auto harp, in two additional performances, will be Linda Huber.

The show will be located at the Hanover Historical Society's Warehime-Meyers Mansion on Baltimore Street in Hanover, PA. There will be plenty to see and artists to meet, as well as plenty of yummy refreshments.

It's Once Again That Time Of Year! The Glass Cutting Has Begun!

Things were busy here last week and will continue the pace as the StoryPeople ornaments will soon be announced and readied for orders.

Did someone say elves? Well, indeed there are elves this time of year here and they are humming and dancing and .... cutting glass right at the moment. Thousands of pieces actually!

Flip Flop Couture

Flip Flop Style On A Dime

OK, I know summer was yesterday and fall is now. However, who could resist one dollar flip flops?? Tis the time of year these babies are found here and there for just a buck.

A plain Jane, I am not. Therefore the dollar flip flops evolved. With a bit of black silk ribbon ( can make by cutting scrap silk on a bias), I made two little bows and hand sewed them to the top of each flip flop.

The next part was easy.....I picked up hand made posies at the Summer In Paris Retreat in Harper's Ferry, VA in August. A working mom, and artist, Jennie Gift, sold pins and barretts made from ribbons and pearls at the vendor show during the conference. Rather than wear these flowers in my hair, I thought they would make cute flip flop adornments! Snip, I cut them free from their hair pins and hot glued them to the bows. Ready for wear.......NEXT summer. ; )

Just Married...

In case one were to notice, there has not been much activity on this blog for a bit. Much to do in the way of a major event going on in our lives. Our son has married the love of his life and Joanna has done the same. The studio activity here is on hiatus, but will resume shortly after basking in the moment...

It was the most beautiful day for a wedding in New Hampshire! Sunny, warm, fall days are undoubtedly the best!! The ocean breeze from a stone's throw away was so New England!

The food was yummy and the bride and groom, awesome. Singing, dancing, eating and some well given toasts were all part of the afternoon.

People came from Canada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and other such far away lands to attend Chris and Joanna's special event. A fun filled evening with a barbeque at the new couple's home followed the luncheon reception.

Not One, But Two Homeless Kitties

Well, there was an unexpected surprise...no, two surprises this weekend. Out for morning coffee and wandering around in the parking lot, was a tiny little kitty. Before I could finish the phrase, "Here kitty, kitty," she was under our car peeking out from the behind the tires. A second more and she was in my husband's arms. What could we do?

Coffee delayed until after a quick trip to the Clearview Animal Hospital in Hanover. They are terrific folks there. They gave her the once over and tested for the dreaded FIV/feline leukemia. Negative meant life. I was glad. She spent the night curled up in our mudroom and with a full belly safe from the elements. Never did get that morning joe.

That would have been the end of it. However, I had a definite feeling there was still a kitty out there... a litter mate perhaps, or the mum. It did not take much deliberation, so in the rain, we went back to where we found the first little girl.

OK, you guessed it, and the title gives it away. Number two was soaked and shivering under a bush. Our Vet once again, gave a good prognosis for number two.

BOTH girls now reside in our mudroom.

A dear friend is considering adopting. It is a big decision though so some time is needed for it to be the right one. They each met and love her already, so it would be an easy fit into a new household if they go......Sigh.

Most of the studio work did not get done this weekend. There were more pressing matters at hand in the form of hugs, petting and flea combing. Work will resume again tomorrow and at break time, a couple of kittens will need attention.

Simply splendid, don't you agree? I am thinking there will be two more ornaments on our "family tree" of ornaments, custom designed by Simply Pretty Stuff, of course.

Shops In Frederick, MD Are Worth The Trip

I had the most fun shopping with girlfriend Carol and bringing home bags of new found treasures. I alluded to all this fun in a recent post and had promised to fill in some of those retail details.

Driving through Frederick, MD, on the way

to Harper's Ferry, WV, girlfriends just have to stop! Lot's has happened to improve this community over the past several years and the town is alive with art and culinary pleasures. I love Market Street and always look forward to stopping in some of the most chic shops, that just seem to scream "welcome girlfriends everywhere."

Our first stop is Molly's Meanderings. Oh, how I love the hat's there. One can also find a large selection of Pandora and Brighton jewelry, fashion clothes and home decor there. http://www.mollysmeanderings.com/

A few steps out the door takes you next door to The Muse. Owner Whitney Bingham is on top of her game with all the local and tri state artists. My Pennsylvania girlfriends just love Whitney. The Muse carries the most unique and beautiful jewelry, hair accessories, clothing and home decor. I love the shoes and am partial to some of her metal artists wonderful work. After all that musing around (he he), we found ourselves in the Simply Beautiful Boutique. Owner Beth Pumphrey arranges the flowers in the shop herself. Beth carries Vera Bradley and Lilly Pulitzer and just "simply beautiful" things!

A more recent addition to Frederick's shabby and certainly chic retail is a store called Tiara Day. Yes, real tiaras can be found there. Honest to gosh, real tiaras! Owner Maria Peck has the best sense of wonderful ephemeral feminine chic for sure. Her store is filled with a surprise at every turn, all staged in a bright spacious SoHo style warehouse look. White washed brick showcase chandeliers, chandeliers, chandeliers and give definite character to the lovely vintage dressforms, perfume bottle jewelry and literary pieces. I just had to have some of these knobs for my own studio!

Charms Sold, Friends Made, Book Binding Learned

In the end, a very successful vendor show for Simply Pretty Stuff at the Summer in Paris Retreat. I made lots of new friends who are also now customers!! Check out these wonderful women and take a peek at the book binding by Carol Novak and moi, of course!
