Wearable Book Pendant Workshop

I love visiting New York in the springtime.  I especially enjoyed my recent trip because it was springtime and it was also time for my workshop!

FIT on 7th Ave

MY TEACHING PACKET!

There was a full class of terrific students at FIT who were all able to complete little wearable book pendants and wear them home.

Thanks to friend, art sister, and fellow instructor Isolina Perez for helping me facilitate such and opportunity at the school. Take a look at some of my students and their work...

Of course, I spent another day shopping at the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market and at the Manhattan Wardrobe Supply.  Here are some of my treasures from the hunt....

ART & SOUL CREATIVE MIXED MEDIA RETREAT: Virginia Beach 2013

An Instructor's Artful Journey

There is always a bit of excitment that ramps up just in time for all the packing when getting ready to leave for another awesome retreat.  Packing means loading boxes of tools and kits for myself and my students, and organizing other containers for vending my glorious and most fabulous wares
: )  I am getting better at it to be sure.  My latest packing stint found me getting ready for another spring Art & Soul retreat in Virginia Beach, VA.   This time I taught three workshops, vended, and just caught up with dear student and instructor friends.

Our room had a portrait view of the beach and most days were splendid and sunny.........It was the perfect time of year to be there actually.  Uh hummm, there was a grocery store across the street which had lots of choices between the healthy and non healthy snack items. Oh sure.... we got some of each!  And, oops!  This cart did make it back across the street before leaving!

I enjoyed my soy latte each and every morning from the little on site cafe. Perfect fuel for starting the day's artful journey!

Our evenings were spent in group projects, if desired. We sent off notes to a far away art friend and sat with new found friends, sipping some wine or snacking on pizzas.

Before lights out, there was a ton of giggle activity in the rooms and hallways.  A healthy dose of silly school girl fun we all had!!

Even with the serious business of creating in the classrooms, we also laughed out loud more than not.  Check out my class peeps, other instructors and all the delicious stuff we made that week.  For many more views of art and giggles, check out Glenny Moir's post and pictures from Kansas City and soon to appear Virginia Beach!!

Vendor nite was tons of fun too.  Vintage, handmade, repurposed, upcylced, paper, lace, metal, it was ALL there..... I loved seeing my students taking treasures home from this event.  Actually, in the moments before the all clear, doors open announcement, I had already spend a few pennies on these lovely things myself!

Thank you Glenny, Marie and Liz for organizing and facilitating such an event for all of us.  Thank you too Judy Gula for you endless retail products to which helped make us all sparkle with excitement!!

Shotgun Shell Secret Compartment RIngs

Designing Women Friends In The Studio

I usually have my studio to myself most days, but once in awhile I have to clean it up!  This is a good thing for workflow as well as for when friends come a-calling!

Art girlz, Charlene and Dele, spent the day working on a couple of their own secret compartment rings using those simply wonderful shotgun shell bezels.

Most of the day was spent chatting, giggling, and working.....and yes, eating a bit at our local Jacquline's Coffee and Tea Spot.  MMmm!

Here are the girlz .......laughing out loud.........and having a great afternoon!

beautiful friends and great students, Charlene and Dele!

Workshop Kits!

Preparations Under Way For Art & SOul 2013

The kits are almost completed!  When getting ready for a teaching venue there is much excitement around our house.  The cats don't see me for hours at a time, I lose track of time and dinner might be an ice cream from the local Ben and Scooters stand.

Each and every time I prepare for a retreat, I get butterflies and lots of adrenalin!  While I print the handouts and double check the list, it is hard for me not to think ahead and visualize my potential students.  Some folks I know, but some will become new friends.  How exciting indeed : )

I look forward this year, to teaching with one of my workshops with an artist friend, who I actually met last year at Art & SOul.

I look forward to making the drive this year with another art gal friend who I also met last year at Art & SOul.

I look forward to meeting up with many other students and instructors, whom I had not seen since last year's retreat.  It is amazing how time flies though and it seems like yesterday since I was with them all at Art & SOul.

Jewelry Affaire Spring 2013 Features Target GLiTz Pendants

Target Glitz Pendants
Creating Glam Out of Recycled Shotgun Shells
Featured in Jewelry Affaire Magazine

Right now, jewelry out of recycled items are popular theme in the fashion industry.  We can help the planet and look good doing it.  : )  I am so excited to once again be one of the lucky artists publishing about these little brass bezels.

This magazine issue also has me excited because a few of my friends are also inside sharing their design techniques and stories.  One friend in particular, writing about her style of shotgun shell necklaces, is Erin Keck.  Erin and I have team taught a wonderful shotgun shell ring and pendant class together.  She certainly creates lots of beautiful steampunk influenced pieces, including clocks and jewelry, and I love that we also actually live within an hour of each other.

This issue is one of my favorites. Full of creative pictures, helpful how to's, and wonderful design elements,  I hope that it becomes one of your favorites too.

Beach Glass and Tu-tu's? Art Is The Connection And Common Ground

West Coast Connections and The List!

I have been heard to say that life is all about connections.... how we connect, where we connect and why we should connect.  The past month has definitely been about connections.  Some of which were planned, and then, some of which that were not.  How wonderful.

It began on a plane to the San Francisco area.  My husband had a week of business there and the change in our virtual piggy bank became my ticket for an adventure.

Now I had been out to the SF Bay area several times before, but this time I was had a list and I was on a mission.  After replacing an all weather SF tourist jacket of many years, I finally ate the Dungeness crabs that I had craved since the last visit, and tanked up on the chocolate from the Ghiradelli Ice Cream Parlour.  Ah, zillions of calories later and those tasks complete, I was ready for the one day of wine and ART in Napa Valley.  Yes, I said only one day.  There was much more on my list this time....

I really, really wanted to visit a little corner of the world called Benecia, just north and to the east of SF.  There are beaches there, reported to have oodles and oodles of beach glass.  I was ready to find beach glass treasure, and I had stashed the baggies in my pockets to haul it!

Benecia is also where my art sisters from the Art Is You Retreat have been, hosting an amazing intensive series of workshops,  and also where dozens of artists now live, work and play.  I understand that a long time ago Benecia was a major operational military arsenal for our west coast.  I  think the armory and barracks now serve a better purpose.

So...........in the middle of an awesome sunny day in Benecia, I found Carrie Campbell Clayden and her oh so fabulous art studio and retail space, Hip Chicks StudioDone in true Californian style, the shabby chic nest of everything glitzy, ruffly, white washed and romantic lived there.  Okay, I wanted to live there too....

Carrie, thank you for spending time with me, showing me around, and jumping up and down for joy in our Tu-tu's that day.  So glad we "connected" Here are some pictures of our Oh, SO FUN day!

Oh, and about the beach glass.  Well, yes there was glass on the beach.... but not so much wave action.  As a result most of the old glass had washed ashore but was still in shard form.  Pretty but also pretty sharp.  I had a helper guy  ; )  and we picked through lots for at least one baggie!!

Another part of my trip found me in Berkeley California for a jaunt down 4th Street to where there was a beautiful stained glass store called the Stained Glass Garden.  Ou La, what wonderful art and classes they offered there!

Also, along 4th Street was a super duper scrapbook supply store called Scrapbook Territory....which said it all!
My feet just walked right in, dragging my purse along with them!!  However, the greatest prize was not found in the many stamps and papers there actually, it was in meeting a kindred spirit, and teacher, Carine RosenblattI was drawn to her table as she prepared a mixed media class for her students.  Carine had been to Art Is....You in Petaluma California before.  We chatted in usual art sister fashion!!  I told her all about us East Coast gals at Stamford, CT  in the Art Is.. Retreat there each fall.  We are now "connected"  as bff's on FB.  hehehe.

Finally, another important, but unexpected stop on this journey was in Palo Alto.  Along California Ave is a small but sassy consignment shop called The Bargain Box.  I had to stop, I just had to!!
Inside, I found a few treasures to make for my shotgun shell bracelet classes....some repurposed belts.  I also found Maggie Peterson!  Maggie was an artist too that volunteered at the shop.  How luck for us to "connect" there and to share a bit about each others lives.  Maggie told me about Asilomar and about the art retreats and classes there.  It is also where Art & SOul events had occurred in the past.  Thank you Maggie for sharing and taking time to chat!

The List:

buy a SF touristy jacket - check
eat crabs and die eating chocolate- check
find the wine and cheese and beauty of two favorite Napa Valley wineries- check
meet the beautiful and talented Carrie Campbell Clayden (and dance in Tu-tu's) - check
collect the beach glass- check (well sorta)
find fellow art sisters along the way- check

West Coast Mission complete : )
